Settling In Policy        Back to Top
We offer parents the opportunity to come into the nursery with their child in order to help them settle in, and for this to be gradually reduced, as their child becomes familiar with his/her surroundings.

Each child is given a Key-Worker, a member of staff who will then liase with parents, with any concerns or pass on any relevant information about how their child has been when in nursery.

We will ask parents to write down their child's routine, their likes/dislikes, anything that will be familiar to the child.

We will also ask parents to bring any comfort items that their child has, for example, a dummy, blanket or a favourite toy.

During a settling in period we may suggest that the child starts on half days or a lesser number of sessions and for that the number to gradually increase.

We offer Parents Evenings so that parents have the opportunity to discuss their child and so they themselves feel comfortable with the nursery.

We will offer parents every reassurance that their child is safe, that we offer a high standard of Care and Education, that we will help them in any way we can through the settling in period and in the future and that they are welcome to phone and check how their child is throughout the day.

Arrivals & Departures        Back to Top
At Kiddies' Corner, we always do our best to ensure each child is welcomed in a way that makes them feel at home straight away. On arrival, the children will be taken into the playroom and allowed the freedom to play with friends and choose their own toy or game.

Parents / carers must sign the child into the nursery with the time of arrival for the child's safety.

Only an authorised adult will collect each child. This adult must be listed on the child's contract.

The child's departure time and parent's signature must be marked in the register by the child's parent.

f a person is required to pick up a child from nursery other than a parent or guardian a special nursery authorisation form, must be completed by the parent. The authorised person must show an official form of I.D. for example driving licence or passport.

Health, Illness, Medication Policy        Back to Top
The health and safety of the children in our care at Kiddies' Corner is paramount, therefore, it is essential that all parents/guardians leave several contact telephone numbers so that if a child is seriously unwell, they can be contacted immediately and their child can be picked up immediately.

If a child's behaviour or character is unusual and we feel there is a cause for concern, parents will be contacted using the phone numbers on our emergency register.

Parents/guardians will be asked to keep their children at home if they are suffering from or showing symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, runny eyes or ears, a temperature of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees centigrade or above, chickenpox, measles, mumps, meningitis and hepatitis and to inform the nursery staff as to the nature of the illness, so that other parents can be alerted and careful observations of other children can be made. A child should not return until they have been free of an infectious disease for at least 24 hours; including diarrhoea, vomiting, runny eyes or ears.

Cuts or open sores, whether on adults or children, will be covered with a plaster or other dressing.

If a child needs to be administered medicines, written permission is required from parents/guardians and exact instructions must be left. Parents must sign the medication form both when leaving the medication instructions and upon picking their child up from Nursery. Parents must also inform the nursery of any possible side effects of the medication, giving us the leaflet that explains these side effects, if the medicine has been bought, for example, Calpol or Tixylix, or a doctors note explaining the side effects if prescribed medication, for example Antibiotics. We have to keep these as part of our records and therefore will be unable to return them to you. The nursery must also be informed of when the last dose of medication was administered to the child.

If a child needs medication that requires technical/medical knowledge, this will be discussed and any appropriate training given.

If a child is ill and cannot attend a pre-booked nursery session, the cost is the full amount.

Accident & Emergency Policy        Back to Top
At Kiddies' Corner we do our best to keep each child safe and away from harm. However accidents do happen, because of this fact, the majority of our staff at the nursery are qualified first-aiders and those whose certificates have expired attend a refresher course as soon as one becomes available. Those staff who do not have a First Aid certificate will attend a course as soon as one becomes available to them.

Procedure

In the event of a minor accident, first aid would be administered accordingly, by a trained first aider. The accident book would be completed by a member of staff and a parent/guardian would be informed and then asked to sign the book.

In an emergency, a member of staff, trained in first aid would administer first aid, whilst another telephones the emergency services and contacts the parent or guardian and informs the officer in charge of the accident. The accident book will be completed.

In the event of us not being able to contact a parent / guardian in an emergency then one member of staff would accompany the child to hospital, taking a copy of the medical declaration signed by the parent / guardian and another member of staff would continue trying the emergency contact numbers until they manage to reach the child's parent / guardian.

We will do our best to keep the child calm, comfortable and cared for throughout the incident.

Food & Diet Policy        Back to Top

Diets and eating practices of all cultures will be positively valued, giving children an opportunity to identify with the familiar and to learn to enjoy and respect other traditions.

Attention will be given to hygiene, storage and waste disposal. Food safety act 1990 and Food Hygiene Amendment (Regulations 1990). Advice will be sought from the Environmental Health Officer where needed.

Parents are asked about children's dietary requirements, preferences & food allergies and the setting will take heed of this information.

Children sit down at a table for their meals, or in a highchair if age appropriate.

Behaviour & Discipline Policy        Back to Top
Our Behaviour Management Policy is designed to ensure the well being of the children and to give parents / guardians confidence in us as their chosen childcare provider.

We aim to work with the children to enable them to develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an environment of mutual respect and encouragement.

In order to achieve this, the following procedures must be followed:

  • Rules governing the conduct of the nursery and the behaviour of the children will be discussed and agreed within the nursery and explained to all newcomers, both children and adults.
  • All adults in the nursery will ensure that the rules are applied consistently, so that the children have the security of knowing what to expect and can build up useful habits of behaviour.
  • All adults will try to provide a positive model for the children with regard to friendliness, care and courtesy.
  • Adults in the nursery will praise and endorse desirable behaviour such as kindness and willingness to share.
  • We will work on a positive behaviour basis, a child can be a member of staff's helper, children will have special privileges for good behaviour, and good behaviour will be rewarded.
  • We will work with flash cards, for example on expected behaviour of the nursery; using good manners, respecting others, keeping the nursery tidy, taking turns and sharing.
  • We will reward good behaviour with stamps or stickers, they can choose their favourite activity. There are no specific times for stamps or stickers just when a child has behaved well, helped tidy up etc. For the older children we also have a sticker chart which has 4 columns one for tidying up, one for good manners, one for mealtimes, and one for good behaviour. The children receive stickers throughout the day which they put in the relevant columns. At the end of each week the child(ren) with the most stickers receives a star of the week certificate.
  • We will take positive steps to avoid a situation in which children receive adult attention, only in return for undesirable behaviour.

When a child behaves in an undesirable way a member of staff will speak to them and ask them to stop. If the behaviour continues the child is given a period of ‘time out' where they spend a few minutes with an adult to discuss the behaviour before returning to the group. This will only be used with children whose knowledge & understanding allows them to understand the sanction, the period of time will be equal to one minute per year of their life. This gives the child some space away from what they were doing and an opportunity to talk with an adult to help them understand the reasons they are in ‘time out'. What the child did that is unacceptable will be explained to them and also the reasons why.

For example If a child hits another child with a toy it is explained to the child in a calm manner that it is not a nice thing to do, that it makes the other child sad / hurts them / makes them cry, and that when you are nice and share toys it makes the other child happy.

Equal Opportunities Policy        Back to Top
All children at the setting will be treated with equal concern and respect.

All staff at the setting will promote equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice within the setting.

Play & Development

  • The activities and play materials in the nursery help the children to broaden their knowledge and understanding of people and cultures in our own society and the world at large.
  • For example, as well as celebrating Christian festivals, we base activities on religious and cultural celebrations from across the globe. The children play with dolls and other toys that reflect race, culture or physical appearance different from them.

Employment

  • Kiddies' Corner will ensure to employ the best person for the job, regardless of physical appearance or beliefs.

No person will be discriminated against on grounds of race, sex, colour, disability, religion, lifestyle or culture.

Staff at the setting will liase with parents to ensure we have the correct information about individual children so that the appropriate care can be given.

Complaints Procedure        Back to Top
Kiddies' Corner aims to provide the highest standards of care to pre-school and after-school children in the area. We wish to provide a safe, caring, friendly, environment where a child can develop and grow successfully and happily.

We welcome any comment, be it critical or complimentary, so that we can improve our service to both the parent and child.

Procedure

  • If a parent has any concerns, queries, criticisms or complaints, it is essential to let a member of the nursery staff know.
  • If, after 2 weeks, the situation has not improved and they feel that the incident has not been dealt with effectively, it is necessary to take the following steps.
  • The complaint or concern should be put in writing
  • Kiddies' Corner will then contact the parent to arrange a meeting at a convenient time.
  • A written record will be made of the meeting and the outcome.
  • We at Kiddies' Corner will do our best to resolve any problems that arise. However, in extreme circumstances, if the problem can not be resolved through discussions between the parent, nursery and in some cases, the child, then the local registration and inspection unit will be involved to ensure that the requirements of the Children's Act 1989 are met.

If a parent feels it necessary they can contact Care and Social Services Inspectorate Wales (CSSIW) with their complaint:
