Health, Illness & Medication Policy Compliants Policy
Settling In Policy Back to Top Each child is given a Key-Worker, a member of staff who will then liase with parents, with any concerns or pass on any relevant information about how their child has been when in nursery. We will ask parents to write down their child's routine, their likes/dislikes, anything that will be familiar to the child. We will also ask parents to bring any comfort items that their child has, for example, a dummy, blanket or a favourite toy. During a settling in period we may suggest that the child starts on half days or a lesser number of sessions and for that the number to gradually increase. We offer Parents Evenings so that parents have the opportunity to discuss their child and so they themselves feel comfortable with the nursery. We will offer parents every reassurance that their child is safe, that we offer a high standard of Care and Education, that we will help them in any way we can through the settling in period and in the future and that they are welcome to phone and check how their child is throughout the day. Arrivals & Departures Back to Top Parents / carers must sign the child into the nursery with the time of arrival for the child's safety. Only an authorised adult will collect each child. This adult must be listed on the child's contract. The child's departure time and parent's signature must be marked in the register by the child's parent. f a person is required to pick up a child from nursery other than a parent or guardian a special nursery authorisation form, must be completed by the parent. The authorised person must show an official form of I.D. for example driving licence or passport. Arrival & Departure times.
Health, Illness, Medication Policy Back to Top If a child's behaviour or character is unusual and we feel there is a cause for concern, parents will be contacted using the phone numbers on our emergency register. Parents/guardians will be asked to keep their children at home if they are suffering from or showing symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, runny eyes or ears, a temperature of 101 degrees Fahrenheit or 38 degrees centigrade or above, chickenpox, measles, mumps, meningitis and hepatitis and to inform the nursery staff as to the nature of the illness, so that other parents can be alerted and careful observations of other children can be made. A child should not return until they have been free of an infectious disease for at least 24 hours; including diarrhoea, vomiting, runny eyes or ears. Cuts or open sores, whether on adults or children, will be covered with a plaster or other dressing. If a child needs to be administered medicines, written permission is required from parents/guardians and exact instructions must be left. Parents must sign the medication form both when leaving the medication instructions and upon picking their child up from Nursery. Parents must also inform the nursery of any possible side effects of the medication, giving us the leaflet that explains these side effects, if the medicine has been bought, for example, Calpol or Tixylix, or a doctors note explaining the side effects if prescribed medication, for example Antibiotics. We have to keep these as part of our records and therefore will be unable to return them to you. The nursery must also be informed of when the last dose of medication was administered to the child. If a child needs medication that requires technical/medical knowledge, this will be discussed and any appropriate training given. If a child is ill and cannot attend a pre-booked nursery session, the cost is the full amount. Accident & Emergency Policy Back to Top Procedure In the event of a minor accident, first aid would be administered accordingly, by a trained first aider. The accident book would be completed by a member of staff and a parent/guardian would be informed and then asked to sign the book. In an emergency, a member of staff, trained in first aid would administer first aid, whilst another telephones the emergency services and contacts the parent or guardian and informs the officer in charge of the accident. The accident book will be completed. In the event of us not being able to contact a parent / guardian in an emergency then one member of staff would accompany the child to hospital, taking a copy of the medical declaration signed by the parent / guardian and another member of staff would continue trying the emergency contact numbers until they manage to reach the child's parent / guardian. We will do our best to keep the child calm, comfortable and cared for throughout the incident. Food & Diet Policy Back to Top Food offered will be properly prepared, fresh, nutritious and well-balanced:
Food is stored safely & if parents bring food for their child they are informed of what can be stored safely Main meals will include the following elements:
Whole, pasteurised milk or water will be offered in preference to squash. All dietary requirements must and will be respected, including:
Diets and eating practices of all cultures will be positively valued, giving children an opportunity to identify with the familiar and to learn to enjoy and respect other traditions. Attention will be given to hygiene, storage and waste disposal. Food safety act 1990 and Food Hygiene Amendment (Regulations 1990). Advice will be sought from the Environmental Health Officer where needed. Food is offered at 9am (toast, cereal), midday meal, (freshly cooked hot meal & pudding) an afternoon snack is offered to the children at 2pm (vegetable sticks and dips, rice crackers, fruit), and afternoon tea at 4pm, (beans on toast, sandwiches, soup with flap jacks and fruit) Drinks (whole milk, water or watered down fresh fruit juice is offered at every meal time and as & when children request it and more often during hot weather. Fresh drinking water is available to children at all times.) Parents are asked about children's dietary requirements, preferences & food allergies and the setting will take heed of this information. Children sit down at a table for their meals, or in a highchair if age appropriate. Behaviour & Discipline Policy Back to Top We aim to work with the children to enable them to develop self-discipline and self-esteem in an environment of mutual respect and encouragement. In order to achieve this, the following procedures must be followed:
When a child behaves in an undesirable way a member of staff will speak to them and ask them to stop. If the behaviour continues the child is given a period of ‘time out' where they spend a few minutes with an adult to discuss the behaviour before returning to the group. This will only be used with children whose knowledge & understanding allows them to understand the sanction, the period of time will be equal to one minute per year of their life. This gives the child some space away from what they were doing and an opportunity to talk with an adult to help them understand the reasons they are in ‘time out'. What the child did that is unacceptable will be explained to them and also the reasons why. For example If a child hits another child with a toy it is explained to the child in a calm manner that it is not a nice thing to do, that it makes the other child sad / hurts them / makes them cry, and that when you are nice and share toys it makes the other child happy. Equal Opportunities Policy Back to Top All staff at the setting will promote equality of opportunity and anti-discriminatory practice within the setting. Play & Development
